ABOUT THE ORIGINAL PAINTING:
Edgar Allan Poe’s The Raven resonates deeply with me, particularly this stanza:
But the Raven sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only
That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered – not a feather then he fluttered –
Till I scarcely more than muttered "Other friends have flown before –
On the morrow he will leave me, as my hopes have flown before."
Then the bird said “Nevermore”
To put this into context with my life: having lost my parents within 6 months of each other I identified with the grief-stricken narrator. I knew his desolation. But what I took from this stanza was that the bird was steadfastly standing by him, perhaps even protecting him - indeed he is still there at the awful end, statue-like, sitting atop the Goddess of Wisdom, Athena.
This poem didn’t inspire the painting, however, it sums up how I feel about my own ‘Nevermore’. As I was painting he came alive and the overwhelming feeling I got was one of protection.
