Thumbelina Dreaming
Oil on Linen
102cm H x 76cm W
When I was five, I was given a book of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales—a gift I loved so much its tattered cover and torn pages still tell the story of how often I returned to it. One story, Thumbelina, captivated me in particular. Her journey through a world of towering flowers, oversized creatures, and the looming threat of living underground both fascinated and frightened me.
This painting is an homage to that childhood memory. The girl, nestled among an explosion of vibrant blooms, embodies the spirit of Thumbelina—delicate yet resilient, seemingly lost yet discovering beauty and strength in her surroundings. While creating this piece, I wasn’t focused on literal details but rather on evoking the sensation of being enveloped by nature, where fragility and power intertwine.
The flowers are more than just a backdrop; they represent how I saw the world as a child—immense, awe-inspiring, and full of wonder. This painting is my way of bringing those early dreams to life, where they continue to shape and inspire my imagination.
