Whispering Stillness
Oil on Linen
120cm x 90cm
This piece was inspired by a visit to the abandoned village of Vatheia in the heart of the Mani Peninsula, Greece.
Wandering around the dilapidated remnants of a once vibrant community, I stumbled upon a scene that transcended the decaying walls.
In the midst of the ruins, I felt an overwhelming sense of suspended time, as if the world beyond had ceased to exist. The play of light and shadows told tales of lives lived, dreams shared, and a collective history etched into the very fabric of the forsaken structures.
This piece is a celebration of the silent dialogue between past and present and through it, I invite viewers to embark on their own contemplative voyage, where the echoes of a bygone era resonate, and time stands still in the artistry of decay.

Inspired from my time at an artist residency at Artspace Gîtes in the village of Fontaine-Daniel in Mayenne, France. I spent a week there but oh how I wish I’d stayed longer, such was the inspiration I gained from this beautiful village and the residency.
I was at a crossroads with my figurative painting and went to France seeking inspiration for a new body of work. I returned to Australia overflowing with ideas for a figurative series based on the interior of the Artspace Gîte (and the beautiful light which flowed into the space) and inspiration for a new series of landscapes based on scenery within and surrounding the village. Fontaine-Daniel has a luminous quality I’ve not seen before and a very special relationship with the trees which surround it.
This painting was the first created from photo shoots conducted within the village and reflects the dreamy light which greeted me every day.

On The Way To Oia
Oil on Linen
60cm x 90cm
Inspired by a trip to Greece. We passed this beautiful church on our hike along the caldera cliffs between Imerovigli and Oia and the stark contrast of white buildings against the deep blue sky and sea was too beautiful not to capture..

This painting formed part of a series which was exhibited at R M Galleries in Brisbane in 2006. The series was an exploration of the figure/nude in landscape with the effect of light on form the underlying theme. This piece was also selected in the 2006 Blake Prize Exceptions Exhibition in Rushcutters Bay Gallery in Sydney and is the last painting available for sale from this series.

Taurus Rising
Oil on Linen

My daughter models for my figurative paintings and our photo shoots take place under the harsh Australian light which makes for dramatic narratives. She is a Taurus and she is definitely very determined so I thought a cow skull would be a fitting companion for her.

FINALIST INTERNATIONAL GUILD OF REALISM JURIED FALL SALON ONLINE ART EXHIBITION 2022
Whilst figurative painting is my first love, I also paint still life and I relish the effect of light on form. This tableau is painted from life in my light filled studio where the strong Australian light creates beautiful vignettes. It's made even more special with the addition of two wooden urns which were my parents' and were such a constant in my life growing up on the farm. Those two little urns were always in the background witnessing the chaotic life of a big loving family - the unconditional love, the laughter, the fighting, the joy, the sadness and ultimately the grief.

This painting is part of my umbrella series, which I began when my mother was diagnosed with MND – perhaps as a subconscious acknowledgement of my need for protection from all the pain that was unfolding. Even though she lost her battle with the insidious disease, I continue to paint them (although less often now) and it has helped me navigate the ongoing grieving process.
The red umbrella against the rather forbidding background signals a dash of optimism and hope as life continues on.

What Lies Beneath
Oil on Linen
60cm x 75cm
Stretched, ready to hang
This is an earlier painting which was part of a series of works of catharsis following the deaths of my parents. My mother loved roses and had a beautiful rose garden which she tended passionately. She had many varieties and colours but the pale peach one always took my breath away. I used it in this piece to represent the beauty of both my parents while the pose of the model suggests the lifting of the veil of grief to allow some light in.

Oriana Curls is a French jazz pop cabaret singer/songwriter based in London whom I met on Instagram. I found a lot of her photos very inspiring and her music beautiful. I love the dramatic effect of the light hitting her face accentuating the passion in her singing.

Into The Maelstrom
Oil on Linen
90cm x 90cm
Stretched, ready to hang
One of the definitions of a maelstrom is “a situation or state of confused movement or violent turmoil.” While painting this piece it struck me that life is just one continuous maelstrom of differing strengths and the only way to handle it is to jump feet first into it!
